El sat\u00e9lite fue lanzado mediante un cohete Pegasus XL de la compa\u00f1\u00eda Orbital Sciences en pleno vuelo, desde la barriga de un avi\u00f3n Stargazer L-1011 modificado. Poco tiempo despu\u00e9s, se produjo la separaci\u00f3n del cohete y la colocaci\u00f3n de IRIS en la \u00f3rbita correcta, donde comenzar\u00e1 su misi\u00f3n: estudiar la baja atm\u00f3sfera del Sol y su evoluci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>IRIS se centrar\u00e1 en el an\u00e1lisis con un detalle sin precedentes de los niveles m\u00e1s bajos de la atm\u00f3sfera del Sol, denominada zona de interfase. Este proyecto ayudar\u00e1 a los cient\u00edficos a entender c\u00f3mo la transici\u00f3n de energ\u00eda a trav\u00e9s de esta \u00e1rea ayuda a potenciar la parte superior a millones de grados de la atm\u00f3sfera del Sol -la corona-, y c\u00f3mo esta forma de energ\u00eda impulsa de forma constante la transmisi\u00f3n del viento solar hasta llenar todo el sistema solar.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Para cumplir su misi\u00f3n, IRIS lleva un telescopio ultravioleta que alimenta un espectr\u00f3grafo de im\u00e1genes multicanal. El sat\u00e9lite es la primera misi\u00f3n dise\u00f1ada que podr\u00e1 usar un telescopio ultravioleta para obtener im\u00e1genes de alta resoluci\u00f3n y espectros cada pocos segundos y que proporcionar\u00e1 observaciones de hasta 240 kil\u00f3metros a trav\u00e9s del Sol.<\/p>\n<p>Gracias a los datos que proporcione la misi\u00f3n IRIS durante sus dos a\u00f1os previstos de duraci\u00f3n, los cient\u00edficos esperan poder llegar a entender un poco m\u00e1s c\u00f3mo funciona el Sol, adem\u00e1s de poder adquirir m\u00e1s conocimientos acerca de las erupciones solares y
