Por suerte, en la realidad no hubo ni p\u00e1nico ni psicosis colectiva, ya que no hab\u00eda riesgo de que la roca chocara contra nuestro planeta.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abTal como esper\u00e1bamos el asteroide pas\u00f3 cerca de la Tierra esta tarde. La roca espacial BX34 2012 es una de las veinte que m\u00e1s se han acercado al planeta desde que se lleva un registro\u00bb, se\u00f1al\u00f3 Tim O&#8217;Brien, director asociado del Observatorio de Jodrell Bank.<\/p>\n<p>El asteroide ten\u00eda alrededor de 11 metros de di\u00e1metro y fue detectado por primera vez el pasado mi\u00e9rcoles.<\/p>\n<p>Hacia las 16:00 horas GMT de este viernes fue el momento en el que el asteroide estuvo m\u00e1s cerca de nuestro planeta, a una distancia de 60.000 kil\u00f3metros aproximadamente, equivalentes a menos de una quinta parte de la distancia con la luna.<\/p>\n<h2>Sin riesgo<\/h2>\n<p>Los astr\u00f3nomos destacaron que no hab\u00eda raz\u00f3n para preocuparse.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abEs una de las aproximaciones m\u00e1s cercanas registradas\u00bb, explic\u00f3 Gareth Williams, director asociado del Minor Planet Center en los Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abSe coloca as\u00ed entre las 20 aproximaciones m\u00e1s cercanas, pero suficientemente lejos&#8230; como para que no hubiese ninguna posibilidad de que nos golpeara\u00bb, explic\u00f3 a la BBC.<\/p>\n<p>El trayecto del asteroide convierte a la roca en la m\u00e1s cercana en pasar cerca de la Tierra desde que el objeto 2011 MD hiciera lo propio en 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Estimaciones anteriores situaban al asteroide a una distancia m\u00e1s cercana, de unos 20.000 kil\u00f3metros, muy similar a la que se encuentran los sat\u00e9lites geoestacionarios, pero las observaciones realizadas durante la noche revelaron que afortunadamente pasar\u00eda m\u00e1s lejos.<\/p>\n<p>El tama\u00f1o del asteroide era similar al de los tradicionales autobuses de dos pisos que circulan por las calles de Londres. \u00abSi bien el tama\u00f1o de un autob\u00fas puede parecer grande, realmente son peque\u00f1os, ya que en caso de entrar en la atm\u00f3sfera se destruir\u00eda y la mayor parte del material se quemar\u00eda\u00bb, sostuvo Williams. The space rock is about 37 feet (11 meters) wide and would have broken apart in Earth&#8217;s atmosphere long before it reached the ground, if it had reached the planet at all, NASA scientists said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab<a href=\"http:\/\/www.space.com\/14373-asteroid-2012-bx34-earth-flyby.html\">Asteroid 2012 BX34 is small<\/a>,\u00bb astronomers with NASA&#8217;s Asteroid Watch at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., said in a Twitter message. \u00abIt wouldn&#8217;t get through our atmosphere intact even if it dared to try.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>The space rock passed Earth at a distance that is only about 0.17 times that between Earth and the moon. For comparison, the moon typically orbits Earth at a distance of about 240,000 miles (386,000 kilometers).<\/p>\n<p>Asteroids this small are hard to spot, and luckily they pose the least concern,\u00bb Asteroid Watch scientists explained. \u00abOur goal is to find the bigger ones.\u00bb [Video and image of asteroid 2012 BX34&#8217;s orbit]\n<p>In September, NASA announced that it has spotted about 90 percent of the largest asteroids (the size of a mountain or bigger) that can come near Earth. About 911 such giant space rocks have been confirmed. Astronomers estimate there are about 981 big near-Earth objects that occasionally creep close to our planet.<\/p>\n<p>Asteroid 2012 BX34 was the second space rock to fly relatively close by Earth this week, Asteroid Watch scientists said. On Jan. 23, another small asteroid \u2014 called 2012 BS1 \u2014 passed by the planet at a range of about 745,000 miles (1.2 million kilometers), which is about 3.1 times the Earth-moon distance.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abAsteroid 2012 BS1 is so small (about 7 meters) it would disintegrate in our atmosphere if it were to come close to Earth,\u00bb the Asteroid Watch team wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers with NASA and other science teams routinely scan the skies in search of near-Earth asteroids that could pose a danger to the planet. Experts estimate that asteroids about 460 feet (140 meters) across and bigger can cause widespread devastation near their impact sites, though a larger space rock would be required to cause destruction on a global scale.<\/p>\n<p>This week, scientists from around the world are also discussing how Earth should respond to the threat of an asteroid impact.
